Burnt Thumbs

Quick bipedal paces along the sidewalk.
Tap tap tap.
Hello? as she answers the phone.
They all stare her down. How could she be so rude?
She hangs up the phone to ask why the lone child is crying.
But they still say How could she be so rude?
She locates the mother.
But they continue to ask How could she be so rude?
The girl continues pacing at a yet faster rate. It seems as if the whispers were getting louder.
The shrieking turns to yelling and now they are screams.
Everyone is looking at her screaming.
She can't leave. They all have surrounded her. Screaming HOW COULD YOU BE SO RUDE?
She asks what? what are you talking about? what do you want from me?
They open up a path for her.
She wonders are they letting her go? She walks the path.
Tap, tap, tap.
How could she be so rude?
She realizes she is the one they chose. The one who must sacrifice herself for the greater good. But they do not know this.
She is a mere imperfection upon their ideal world.
She begins to run.
Faster, faster, faster.
She reaches the end of the world. Where she falls off the earth and the universe.
This is the most she can ever do and will ever be able to do. She has given herself to them.
Someone whispers, I've never known any person to ever have been so rude?
